When you don't have a 3D program yet, I would advice to try out DAZ Studio since it's for free, while Poser cost. I don't know which one is better in the end since I only have DAZ and can't afford to buy Poser just to check it out.

http://www.sharecg.com/ for free stuff but you have to be careful what you get since it's not allways clear for which program it is.
