Concerning Crawk. Crawk was an accident of nature. His egg, preserved in a glacier, had hatched millions of years after the last of his kind had died out, when it was carried into this reservoir. When he grew up, he had eaten everything alive in his pond. Nowadays he hunted a little outside, mostly snakes, lizards, small mammals an the occasional deer. Being cold blooded, he didn't need much to eat and had not ventured far from his home. He had not seen any human so far, and no human had ever seen him.

A lot of Crawks behaviour was hardcoded into his DNA, including mating rituals. In the time of the crawks, when a adult male saw something smaller than him walking on two legs it was either a younger male or a female.
