The governor of the area was named Chivington. He ordered a massacred family to be displayed on the boardwalk in Denver by the recruiting table. It was effective. They recruited over 500 new volunteer soldiers who were then involved in the Sand Creek Massacre. These were not the Indians who had killed the settlers, they had a new treaty with the US Government. The volunteers raped and killed and butchered old men, women, and children. The braves were out hunting.
