Yours is clearly a world where life is cheap and playful suicides aren't that big a deal but, since the boys usually seem surprised, they're probably not super-common either. Mind you, he should have taken a big clue when she let him push that long pin inside her belly - who knows what life-threatening internal damage that did and yet she was cool with it! lol.

But yeah, I like the idea of having the explanation in your head that may be hinted at from time to time but doesn't necessarily need to be part of the story. It's just helpful for you as the writer to have as vague idea - helps with "world-building" :-)
