Yep, that could be difficult under these circumstances. But even the ancient Egyptians had their ingenious inventors. And despite it is a technologically impaired village, it looks like Leonardo da Vinci may have already lived. Why not let them stumble across an old weird machine?
OTOH, I understand that – from the artist's point of view – the "reinvention" of such a device takes a lot effort and time, which is lost to the progress of the story.
