Going by depictions from ancient greece that was a fairly common style of battlefield equipment. Nobody wore pants, and while a lot of soldiers wore leather skirts to give some protection below the belt, well…everyone had to bring their own gear, and affording just a bronze or reinforced-linen cuirass and shield was difficult enough for the average citizen :P.

(Fun fact: When you're dealing with stabby and slashy implements of war, clothes can be a real liability as dirty cloth can get stuck in a wound if you're hit and lead to infection)
