They do not regenerate but rather "respawn" after some time when they die, remembering what happened before as a dream. So they have to die to get fixed or otherwise they will stay damaged and annoyed with pain.

In some ways it all depends on their knowledge as if someone is unaware about getting resurrected they behave as if death is permanent but if they die few times and notice that it is not permanent they do not fear of dying anymore.

I think this place actually could be a purgatory/hell in another world. where you get when you die or when you are sleeping and dreaming. but it is not fully known how it works :)
