In my experience getting burned hurts way way more than getting chopped into pieces alive :)
So I think in the current situation her brother is not even aware what's coming for him :) he will just be unable to scream to scare everyone. ;)

As for the rendering issues main problem is hair and face which should be kept untouched and also remaining skin should change color somewhat uniformly.
