Well, basically you are right. That is why I wrote "the feeling of freedom of choice". The difference lies in the availability. The author has a certain control about the order. And because the reader has not the complete choice from the beginning he/she/it has no idea if the selection makes a difference. This keeps the tension. An additional benefit is the option for the author still to add a few dependencies if desired - even later as extension. Something might happen if you eat directly before you swim. Off course it is a tightrope walk between keeping it simple and manageable and doing the big step of "becoming a game design professional". :)
