I am not the artist here,but,they do look like "Poser" or the free "Daz3D Studio" render software programes created them.The toon like ones with just a toon render setting applied during the render. Hope that helps some, just google the software names above.

In fact, never mind that question for now - is there any way to make the 32bit version run stably on a laptop with intel graphics as its only choice, or am I basically fucked? It crashes like a drunk trying to ride a ducati on an ice rink.

I'm a (non-guro) 3D artist using Blender and its raytracing Cycles Renderer.
Not sure how it compares to DAZ 3D, but with only an integrated graphics chip, you're basically boned.
I just upgraded from a Geforce 600 series GPU to a GTX 1070, which is only adequate.
You might want to save up for either a better PC or an external GPU enclosure, if you're serious about 3D stuff.

No, I'm not really "serious enough" about mucking around with a free download 3D modelling package to basically buy a brand new computer for it, no. Especially when the CPU itself is reasonably strong, and the integrated GPU is on a level with a lot of discrete cards from 5-ish years ago when people had already been using programs like this for a couple decades already.

Is there no kind of software-only or low-quality mode that I can set it into just for putting scenes together? I don't particularly give too much of a shit about how long the rendering takes. Or even if it looks any good to start with. Just want to see what I might be able to do with it, without spending hundreds of pounds only to find out that the answer is "nothing much".

The main problem doesn't seem to be hardware power after all, it seems to be more of a software problem. Sometimes the intel graphics driver, but more often Daz just causes an access violation or other kind of crash within its own modules. Which seems pretty stupid really... no kind of worthwhile exception handling or anything, and maybe doesn't bother checking what the hardware is capable of before trying to preview or render... then when the gpu throws a "unknown instruction" error it just dies instead of reverting to either software rendering or drawing black pixels and popping up a "your hardware is too shit" dialogue box.

It's not like I'm trying full-on print quality IRay renders or anything, just trying to get to a point where I can put a posed character in front of a background with hair, clothes, and maybe a prop, and save it without the program falling over. It can't even manage to save the current scene a lot of the time, suggesting there's something seriously wrong with it. Hell, can't even get through the included tutorial because first time through it crashed whilst trying to apply the prescribed outfit to the prescribed figure, and now it can't find either of them in the Smart Objects menu...

Maybe I'll just toss it and try SFM instead, even though that's a stupidly huge install that'll take all day and night to download and consume a considerable proportion of my remaining drive space.

...it wouldn't be too stupid a question to ask if 4gb RAM (3-ish usable) with a conservative limit on the shared VRAM window is too little memory, would it, given that they actually provide a 32bit version after all?

I started doing 3d rendering too, and there is no need fro super expensive hardware.

my computer is using 3ghz quad core xeon, crappy video card which as no use for rendering and 7 gb of ram. with total cost of everything less than 100$
and I can render somewhat adequate 3d image with iray within 20 minutes

so I guess that main issue here is memory, because memory usage close to 6Gb during renderings and if you have only 4 gb, computer may very likely crash or go extremely slow.

also if you have very bad video card it may have problems even to render view port.

I'd also question how you were able to get hold of a Xeon of any kind, never mind plus video card and memory, given that the latter have certain minimum prices even for shitty ones, and the former is a SERVER CLASS CPU. Do you work as an IT tech and steal an old server then upgrade it or something?

The video hardware is what's integrated to the CPU, but as it's an i5 it's not that terrible, I can play a lot of reasonably sophisticated games with little trouble, and it renders the viewport OK for almost everything, just occasional items appear to crash. I can't be at all certain it's not buggy code in either the program or the object files, though. Rendering via OpenGL produces images of the same quality in "quick" mode (and usually in a fraction of a second), somewhat fucked up and overlit in "high quality" mode (driver or software issue, then, not detecting the actual hardware capabilities?), and presumably as good as what anyone else would have in the main (software + hardware-assistance) mode, just rather slowly for certain things. When I can get to the rendering stage, that is... so far it's been very hit and miss and never more than one character, one background/simple environment, and maybe one prop. The crash point can come even as I try manipulating the character with various poses, but usually when trying to import other items.

Maybe it's a memory thing, but:
1/ I've got shitloads of swap space, so I'd expect maybe chronic slowdown, but not out-of-memory errors (though possibly that's what the access violations translate to?)
2/ Most of the time, if I have Task Manager running (which I do fairly often thanks to web browser BS), the allocated memory count doesn't max out, or even get too close to that point
3/ They're all 32 bit versions of the software (which implies they should work with 4gb RAM or less), necessary as I have a 32bit OS, often the minimum memory given is less than what I have, and no warnings are given e.g. that you may suffer instability or serious restrictions on usability by using that version, or having limited amounts of memory, or that you need to run a machine and an OS version capable of memory address extension in 32-bit mode, with more than 4GB onboard, so the program can access upto that much "clean" memory all to itself.

Oh and bear in mind there's no particular guarantee that you'll have more working space available for non-code data with 6-8gb in a 64bit system than you would with 3-4gb in a 32bit one, as the code takes up twice as much room, and the system will be compelled to use a larger disc cache and do less swapping.

iRay, at this point, is completely irrelevant and of no interest to me whatsoever, because if I can't render with the lower-end engines, or even get the fucking viewport mode to work properly, then quite obviously I'm not going to get anywhere with that. Plus I don't have an NVidia card anyway, which is its main target and what it will run fastest with. It's something I'd only pay attention to if I managed to get the software working and find I had any kind of talent for the medium.

People were happily making renders back in the pre-Core days, with much weaker GPUs (or no GPU assistance at all outside of the viewport), 2GB or less memory, platter drives with less capacity than my SSD, no 64bit code available, etc, so this really shouldn't be an impossibility or that much of a difficulty for a ~3 year old system that was far from an ultracheap option when bought. SFM particularly I thought should be usable by any machine that can handle the Source engine as-is, and I can play Portal 2 and Team Fortress on here after all...

Xeons are cheapest processors available. you can buy cheap ones for few $
price if 3.2ghz quad core for less than 30$
Mainboard is another 30-50$ depending on where you get it
if you buy server motherboard you will get ability to use shitload of super cheap and very reliable ram and you can even stick 2 processors making your system very powerfull.
If you just use common motherboard ram will be more expensive and you will be limited to 1 cpu.

If you only have laptop you are screwed.

if you want to go into 3d rendering for low cost I would recommend you to buy some crap computer with lga775 motherboard and 4 ram sockets then buy some XEON cpu from ebay and get 4 sticks of 2gb ram.

You do not need Nvidia card for Iray if runs pretty well on cpu too.
but if you have problems with iray you can try "lux renderer" or "reality", but those require more complex scene setup.

I'm still trying to work out what part of "I'm not going to spend any money on this" isn't clear. Eighty bucks is still eighty bucks more than zero. I'd be more inclined to put that cash towards a render package that can actually work on my machine, e.g. some older version of the same line which doesn't have such demanding minimum specs.

Especially as buying a CPU and motherboard doesn't help very much when I haven't got a desktop machine to transplant it into in the first place (laptops don't tend to be very amenable to CPU swaps, certainly not ones that need a whole different socket standard), and would then need to go about getting a system disc and OS for it etc, plus a video card of sufficient power, 8gb or more of reasonably fast RAM, so on and so forth.

After all if all that was needed was a sufficiently powerful CPU, why can't I instead just swap instructions/sec for a longer render time? I've enough years of computer use under my belt to remember when raytracing even simple scenes at 320x200 could be a 24-hour job (and then you had to go about the business of converting the truecolour output into something your 16 or 256 colour machine could actually display), so having my quad core (?? or maybe dual with hyperthreading, I can never remember) i5 run for 2 or 3 times as long as a Xeon might is no big hardship.

It's not like it's a game that demands a certain amount of FPS to be playable. So long as the machine can execute the necessary instruction loops and my HDD has enough space for both all the meshes and textures plus the necessary swap space, why can't I choose to let it run for many hours (or days, if I work up to a complicated scene) in lieu of blowing money I don't have (else, you know, I would maybe have not gone for a free software package?) on hardware I might rapidly find I don't really need and is hugely over-spec for anything else I would use the machine for?

Feels awfully like Mac mentality infiltrating the previously much more exact-hardware- (and CPU-speed-)agnostic PC userbase.

So, again, is it literally the somewhat unbelievable case that there isn't any software out there at all that will run on a reasonably modern mobile x86 platform with a typical GUI (...of the type that's been sort of familiar since Cyberstudio way back on the Atari ST), or IS there actually some kind of alternative to what I've tried so far (IE current versions of DAZ, SFM, Blender) that will successfully make it to the end of setting up a scene in a simplistic software- or Intel-compatible-hardware-rendered view then rendering it (however long that takes) using the same resources just more intensively? I mean ... shit... I've done POVray renders on an entirely unaccelerated 486 before that were notionally more complex than what's caused DAZ to throw its toys out of the pram on this machine, so I'm not exactly inclined to immediately suspect the hardware of being at fault.

Just to re-emphasise the point: I'm NOT at all interested in ANY kind of additional hardware at this point, unless perhaps it can connect via USB3 or the docking station connector (or fit in the same Expresscard54 slot as my USB3 adaptor) and costs, say, no more than $50, preferably under $25. I want the question I'm asking answered, not the one you think I should be asking. Alternative options can be considered once that's dealt with.

BTW I don't remember seeing an option for Lux or Reality in the settings of any of those packages, but I'll have another look. Are they things that need to be specifically downloaded and installed as plugins, rather than coming with the software by default?

Fundamental problem with laptop is that its memory is too small you need something above 4gb. or else it will just crash. if you managed to upgrade it to 8gb it would be usable
Considering desktop machine you can easily get it for very low price next to free specs do not matter, so main issue is not so much about money but whether you have space to keep it.


If you want to use your laptop so much you can do it at some extent, but you will be required to use 3delight rendering engine which output is not very realistic and to make things reasonably fast you will need to limit amount of light sources and avoid using complex structures like hair and you will have lots of other limitations.
It is real pain in the as in comparison to using decent machine where all you need to do is to set your scene add some HDRI environment and get great results without any effort


Here are some tests:
rendering only one naked genesi3 character with hair required 900mb in 3delight and 1800mb in iray mode
adding clothing increased memory requirements twice

Thing is, that's not a specific laptop problem, it's fundamental to any 32bit machine unless it happens to have an EAX processor and an OS that can take advantage of it. Desktops would suffer just as much.

Thing is, they supply a 32bit version of the program, with no caveats that it may have severely compromised abilities or stability, so surely that means they have fair confidence that you can at least get through the basic tutorials on such a system? Plus, i have plenty of drive space for an extensive swapfile, and that on a pretty rapid SSD no less. Whilst that doesn't help too much in terms of maintaining FULL speed, or the available per-thread memory (though it would still double it), if the scene building and rendering processes are broken up into several threads they could each have a virtual 4gb space to work in if they want.

I can't help thinking I've been over all this before. That and the notion that I'm not particularly bothered by render speed and can leave it running in the background for days if needs be. I just want to be able to at least successfully finish building a scene with more in it than a single bare character model, save it, and then render it in half decent quality rather than something that looks like a PS2 game. If an otherwise perfectly good 4gb, i5 laptop can't do that with a 32bit app under a 32bit OS then the programmers need to stop making false advertisements and withdraw the 32bit version already.

Plus it's starting to feel like I'd have better luck defining the scene as a textfile script, and feeding it into POVray on my old Atari ST (1mb RAM, no hard drive, 720k floppy drive and an 8Mhz 16bit CPU with literally NO graphical acceleration of ANY kind). Because, sure, it took 24 hours to render even moderately complex scenes, but it WOULD actually DO IT! With probably 1/1000th the memory and Cpu power, and one millionth the disc space...

32bit systems are quite rare now, as this is extremely old stuff.

the problem is that new 3d models are gigantic and especially hair is most problematic in rendering because it has huge amount of polygons with transparency and reflections. si that eventually hair will take more time to render than everyting else combined

so your solution would be to use older 3d models with less polygons and simple skin which renders easily on any pc.
the end result is similar to OpenGL output but slightly better
however in that case you can forget about any photorealism

I started doing that myself just because if you render anime style images they look great with older models and even better than with modern ones in fraction of the time required to render current stuff.

you should be bothered by rendering speed because doing photorealistic picture of decent quality will take all day and computer will be unusable during that time.
