Have you ever played any arcade games like "Time Crisis" or Area 51? Enemies step out of cover to appear on screen before the player shoots them.

When it comes to the shooting deaths, I wonder if it might look better or be easier to do if styled like that. Feels like Zako territory too, which I like. Generic henchmen/lesser female combatants stepping out of cover to open fire, but instead are gunned down by an offscreen foe.
