That's a good question actually. I always imagined Kayla as a daughter of a rich family who was probably kidnapped for ransom (and then kept) or maybe gambled or sold away.
She'd end up being sold to this circus where she's kept more like a side-show pet than an actual performer. I'm not sure if she herself has the regenerating abilities, or if the circus just has a really good healer.

Rika, the one with the black hair, would have been just strait up sold to the circus by her family for the money.

The story on them is still a little shaky, I haven't fully thought it out yet, but that's what popped into my head when I first was designing them.
I plan on adding more girls eventually.
