Monica Smith woke up on the brisk Thanksgiving morning, the same as she did any other day, wrapped in the warm naked embrace of her husband, Kevin. She snuggled against him in the early morning rays as she yawned softly and mentally prepared herself for her day.

She stretched as she left the soft satin sheets of her love nest to go and prepare breakfast for her family.

Monica rummaged through the fridge, fishing out some cold eggs, and a thick slab of hand cut girl bacon, which she slid into a preheated pan of sizzling oil. She was greeted with the heavenly aroma of cooking meat.

The smell filled the space and magically summoned her daughters and husband from their slumber. Kevin planted a small kiss on her cheek, his handlebar moustache tickling her as he did so.

“Bacon and Eggs for breakfast, I knew I married you for a reason. You really are the best cook. I can't wait to see what you whip up for Thanksgiving dinner tonight” he complimented her.
She smiled at the attention he was giving her.

Karin, her eldest, switched on the TV using the remote as she waited to be served her breakfast. Penny poured herself a bowl of cereal, claiming that she was on a diet. Monica rolled her eyes at her daughter's antics. The girl could stand to shed a few pounds, but she knew that the diet would only last till the end of the week.

Monica fished out the food from the frying pan and plated it onto the china plates, wheeling it out to the dining table. She sat down and placed a crispy bit of girl bacon into her mouth while she watched the morning news program. It was some morning show doing a puff piece on the presidential turkey pardons. It was the same thing as this time every year.
All the way across town, Caroline Everett tossed in bed as her alarm blared noisily in her darkened room. She blinked through sleep crusted eyes. A single shard of hot light pierced the middle of the room from where a gap in the curtains let it creep in. The second hand alarm clock blared its tinny ring that was too loud for her brain. Caroline slapped down on the snooze switch hard.
“Five more minutes she muttered under her breath” knowing somewhere in the back of her mind that she’d probably actually take thirty minutes more.

Still half asleep, she thoroughly brushed her teeth in her bathroom. She was diligent, even though she barely had the willpower to keep the brush moving.

In the living room, she could hear her sister beginning to rouse for the day. She showered quickly and dried off, hurrying out to the kitchen to ensure her sibling got something to eat before she went out on her morning run.

She lifted an almost empty box of Dolcett O’s and poured it out into a bowl of milk. Carolime brought the cereal over to Lizzie, and dipped a spoon in, bringing out a bright mouthful of milk-drenched wheat rings, up to Lizzie’s lips.

Lizzie hadn’t been the same since her state mandated lobotomy.

Once, she’d been a university student, with a bright future, the kind with an important job, and grade B exemption papers.

Now, she just drooled and spoke simple words in a monotonous retarded drawl. It was what you got when you attended campus protests against the national Dolcett policies. What a stupid thing to do for someone so smart.

Caroline looked sadly upon the vacant face of her sister.
