    Hey just a quick protip, greyscale images like these can actually have considerably smaller filesizes when saved as a PNG - see the attached image as an example.

    For reference, all I did was open the JPEG in MS Paint, re-save it as a PNG, then run the PNG through the program "APNG Optimizer" (which reduces the filesize without any reduction in quality).

    And of course you'd likely see even smaller filesizes if one were to save as PNG directly from the source artwork rather than re-saving from a JPEG.

    Well if you set the JPEG compression even lower then the PNG would be larger. :P

    Nevertheless, keep in mind that this only works if the image is saved as a true greyscale or 8bpp PNG - when it's a full 24bpp PNG then yeah the PNG is usually larger, but that's why I used "APNG Optimizer" since it automatically takes care of that stuff*



    *the only case where "APNG Optimizer" doesn't automatically take care of that stuff is with greyscale images that technically aren't greyscale (that is, if you counted the amount of colors in the image, you'd come up with a value that's greater than 256; such images usually have color-counts in the thousands even though to the eye they look completely greyscale). I believe this is what happens if you scan a real-world sketch but leave your scanner set to scanning in color.

    I was about to ask "why JPEG?" considering the discussion we just had, but then I realized it actually has some color. :P

    Interestingly enough, it is actually still a teeny bit smaller as a PNG after being ran through "APNG Optimizer" (by a whopping 4KB) and, as I mentioned before, it'd likely be smaller if not re-saving from a JPEG.

    Hi Anguro, I really love your work and I really want to help support your patreon but your reward tiers are kinda out of wack. I recommend taking a look at the patreons for Ayaswan and Feather as a guide. I'm subscribed to both and I'm able to access all their content for $10 a month each. I can swing $10 a month. Ayaswan has a bigger backlog of stuff so to prevent people just coming and going, he only makes the $10 tier have access to his last three months of work. After you build a bigger backlog of stuff you can try the same thing too. But yeah, you really should try a $10 access to all your current finished work tier.

    Protip: a lot of times these sorts of greyscale images can actually have a smaller file size if you save them as PNG (and they can obviously be higher quality to boot).

    See attached image as an example, I merely resaved the source JPG as an 8bpp greyscale PNG with the standard PNG compression set to 9.

    While I'm ecstatic to see that you took my recommendation of using PNG for your greyscale sketches, I can't help but notice that they're really not all that well compressed at all - I mean, doing nothing but resaving >>22473 with PNG's standard built-in compression level set to only 1 (which is the lowest possible without counting uncompressed @ level 0) actually still gave a smaller file size of 834KB...

    Shoot, even saving a PNG in Windows 7 MSpaint resulted in a smaller file size of 848KB, and MSpaint is notorious for having very unoptimized PNG compression.


    For a bit of perspective from the other extreme, running the same image through the program "APNG Optimizer" with default settings resulted in a filesize of only 448KB (see attached).

    I really like your art if you couldn't tell already, but GIF's 256-color limit isn't exactly ideal, so using animated PNG would be an easy way around that.
