Wouldn't the actual equivalent of month-day-year be minutes:seconds:hours? It's basically just a corruption of your typical big endian format where the largest value (year / hours) is stuck on the end rather than the beginning.
This is most obvious in that when you drop the last value (year / hours), it the result is month-day or minutes:seconds which is just a a shorter version of the typical big endian format.
