Discord is just a faddish millennial's IRC. Everyone's into it because it's trendy. The #guro channel (wish I could remember which server) far pre-dates the appearance of Discord as a service, and I wouldn't be surprised if it outlasts it too. Plus it's rather more private... you're less likely to run across it by accident, say, and I expect it gathers/holds/reveals less public information about you.
