And well, this comes down to community standards as well as just moderation. Guro tumblr didn't have a moderator, but if somebody had a shitty attitude – maybe misogyny, or just a general asshole – they were ignored or people argued back until they were chased out, because the initial base set the tone. It's the same thing the chan sites do. But 4chan had an initial base that skewed male, and there was a group of people on /r9k/ actively harassing women and posting hateful stuff to get them to leave just because they were female. That site turned into a shithole.
I don't think there's value in welcoming everyone in general. If one person is near-universally disliked because they don't act respectfully, then acting otherwise is just catering that serves nobody. That goes beyond gender and more into social norms.
I actually found the process of arguing with interlopers on Tumblr until they leave more unpleasant than having a reasonable moderator to ban people. It's more 'free' but it's an atmosphere with more hostility. For all this stuff about freedom, when an unmoderated community reaches a certain size, it tends to either be overcome with hostility to the point that non-combative types would start leaving, or achieve some "harmony" by alienating anybody who doesn't fit the hivemind. Tumblr and 4chan were both awful on that. Gurochan is small enough it doesn't have too many obnoxious people, but that 'anything goes' attitude provides a limit to growth. I'm not suggesting it change, it is what it is… but people might filter through /dis/ and leave when they find communities with more pleasant norms.
