We can only have rights if everyone has them, including the people we hate most. The moment rights are taken away from some people, we have to recognize that these rights could also be taken away from us. Because we failed to defend the rights of others, we are put under siege by the people whose job is now to judge us and decide whether we are worthy.

It's ultimately a matter of taste, but personally I don't fear horrible people when they have no power over me, so I don't mind chatting with them. I might even be able to learn about why they think that way and help them see the world a little differently. In contrast, when the iron fist starts to close in and people are being banned and frightened into silence, that's scary. That's why we should stand up for the rights of horrible people.
