Somebody who is comfortable in their own self worth doesn't need to belittle others in order to demonstrate that.

Trying to tear down your associates in order to increase your status, rather than sharing your authentic opinions, is pathetic. And if your authentic opinion towards other people in your group – assuming a group that you chose to be part of, not sex or the like – is negative – it's pitiful to choose to associate with people "below you." It's the activity of somebody who feels threatened seeking out and creating bonds with people who they find worthy of respect.
