Those might be major gathering hubs, but they kicked us out for not being like-minded. The question we're faced with is whether we want to emulate them, or might we be better. Unfortunately it is probably human nature to expel people who are different, but it's lovely to fantasize that there could be better places, at least on the internet.

We only lack the appropriate infrastructure because the people with that infrastructure kicked us out. If we'd just stop kicking each other out we might be able to get together and arrange for more infrastructure, but we keep cutting ourselves off in the name being like-minded. Sometimes it's better to embrace people who aren't exactly like-minded and to explore the world from other perspectives.

The choice we have to make is whether we're going to socialize with a insular little community, or whether we're willing to expose ourselves to humanity in general.

Even though we may say that, we're willing to label people as fucked-up weirdos and kick them out, just as we have been labelled as fucked-up weirdos in the past. Given that, we should ask ourselves if we're really looking for a place to belong, or are we more interested in venting our frustrations by treating other people the way we've been treated?

If this seems extreme, it is only because expelling people from a community is an extreme act that should not be taken lightly. Unfortunately it is so easy to label people as fucked-up weirdos and then totally cease to care about them.

It can be really hard to see people talking this way, because it's so easy to see where it leads.

Are we really that far off topic? Perhaps, but some people seem to think that this is part of the divide between male-dominated and female-dominated guro communities. I'm no sociologist; I have no idea if it's true or not, but either way this topic grew organically out of the topic of this thread. Perhaps there really is no connection between this and gender, but the only hope we have for determining that is by talking about it.
