honestly, this is a pretty ingenious answer to the question, though it also arguably has been done before, and it has it's limits. a normal life over a long enough period of time will become unbearably boring, with or without torture directly involved, but rapid ups and downs can extend the agony by giving them something to hold onto life for. i think the best option is to connect their brain to some kind of device that forces them to experience everything there is in life, and then basically just let them spend the rest of their life unable to experience anything nearly as good or bad as what they experienced over just a few moments. i wonder how it would result. granted, i fear that might break them, so maybe use the device to repeat it a few times, idk.
