I don't know of any academic discussion of the subject (although it doubtlessly exists) but I do want to add that the Nazi "newspaper" Der Stürmer got people hooked on it through writing in lurid, pornographic detail about various rape-murders (usually of pretty, innocent aryan girls by brutish foreigners and/or jews), very few of which actually took place (and the facts of the cases that DID happen were twisted to hell and back). So some of the first snuff stories seeing wide release were literally nazi propaganda and helped to indoctrinate their readers into their ideology.
