Considering that all academic stuff is largely government propaganda tuned towards the goal of increasing productivity I doubt if studies like that will exist or if they will have any validity. And this is why they will be always pathologizing any phenomenon which is decreasing productivity and tax collection.
Even harmless fetishes like socks and feet are heavily pathologized by state approved ideology.

I see it is more common when various people like professional or amateur psychologists make up their own theories how it works but there is no proven mainstream theory.
