No, that's exactly my point, that it is irrelevant if character is somebody or not. What matters is if they are facing consequences or not.
It does not matter if Romeo and Juliet existed or not in reality what maters is that in the fictional world they never die for real there always can be sequel where they get back and continue. real people can't do that once they cant come back.
It does not matter if Hogwarts exists it maters that it is indestructible, you can nuke it into dust and it will be all fine next moment.
if you could do same with real world then it would make no difference form fantasy anymore.
In some way yes if someone else is the author or the story they can make characters die for good which is not so much a death than end of the story and knowledge that you will never see those characters again.
But if you keep bringing characters back then they are by definition immortal they can't die and they behave like they know it.
It is same as those old comics/cartoons where everyone dies on every episode then come back fine in the next or even in the next scene as if nothing even happened.
My argument was not that characters don't die in *your* stories only I said they don't die in any story unless they are eased from existence.
that is the fundamental problem of fiction
same as death is "put character on the bus" and just make them go away peacefully. It is no different from making them die and it is juts as sad.
Your characters will die when you make last story with them and they will never come back not even in your fantasy. Then you will feel what does it mean to die.
On those stories the argument was rather about how you make story looks less stupid, because it becomes irritating to see how characters are clueless about how their world works. Some breaking of 4th wall is expected after some time and they should finally get aware that they are in the story and start behaving accordingly
As how many time times can have batman and joker fighting each other like for the first time? eventually it has to progress into something when they both decide that it is all futile and change attitude. and if they don't then it starts breaking immersion because you see them like idiots doing same thing over and over.
It is like you are audience reliving "groundhog day" and observing same thing happening but can't even change anything.
There must be at lest some progression.
