Is it odd? Sure. Not the worst thing I've seen though. And definitely don't pull them yourself. You're 100% correct about fucking it up. Between infection, pain, and possibly worse (on top of having to get a replacement tooth) it ain't worth the trouble, or money. There's a reason they put you under for it lol.
