I never understood that part of the US dental culture. On Europe, they do those procedures under local anesthesia, so you don't feel any pain, but definitely feel the teeth being pulled out (had to get a molar out back then, so I can attest). There's no need to get you completely unconscious and it's much safer that way (general anesthesia is hella dangerous).
