Is there any way to link external image while having site to show a thumbnail, or is that reserved only to directly hosted images? If not, would you kindly consider such option?

I'm asking because of "no realistic AI, host it elsewhere rule" and so second part of question is if linking such thumbnail would pose any legal risks to the site.
