i wont make new thread as to not make it a tradition to start threads for every newcomer, so here's my thing. I'm also relatively new, idk why but it was kinda hard to land here.

I wanna ask ppl who were here for some time whats the history behind this website? I've scrolled through threads and uncovered numerous other fallen forums, some guroch villains, drama with hackers, people wishing for old gurochan to return. Seems that I missed its prime years, huh? Also, whats the culture now? What changed? Any other websites? I know I'm asking a lot of long questions, but I'd be grateful if someone could catch me up, cuz I'm really vibing here

Also usually chans dont like newcomers, but here people are chill with that. I know this is prolly because the traffic is slower than before, but still cool

A lot has been lost in the mists of time...

I'm sure others will jump in if they can answer your questions.

GC started as a 4chan spinoff (one of the first of its kind). Back then, 4chan was pretty cool, so there was no need for millions of alternative imageboards like there are nowadays. The only demographics who needed spinoffs were perverts like us. And furries.
After moot banned guro on 4chan, this site was founded by a few faggots on irc, and the .net iteration of the site remained on the web for a long time.
When gurochan had launched, there was a steady flow of guro porn being produced on the internet. Tons of websites for dark sexual fantasies were already well established, but this was the 2000s; original internet art was in its prime, and new macabre doujinshi manga imported from japan were always being scanned by groups who would share them, for free, on sites like this, and the adjacent forums.
Taboo fetishes like scat and bodymod were shunned and banned from /d/ on 4chan, so fans of that stuff were allowed to stay here too, on /s/ and /f/.
Over time, the production of new guro slowed down. Futaba, which was the only other imageboard that had guro boards, started cracking down on guro, and fads like jissouseki died out (that's a history lesson for another day... actually, just do your own fucking research, I'm tired)
anyhow, gc shuts down around 2013 or 14 because the owners either got v& or addicted to heroin, and some new chumps took over not too long after. the new iteration of the site stays up for some time, but eventually that one shuts down too. you'll notice some of the earlier threads on /dis/ are quite hostile; that's because the last owners of the site said "uh guys, we're gonna ban most of the guro here because our webhost asked us to lol". That was the same excuse moot gave everyone on 4chan in 2004.
A few shitty owners thereafter, the new guy we have now is pretty cool. Except for when he doesnt make backups and tryhard raiders flood the boards and erase years' worth of content.

    >Futaba, which was the only other imageboard that had guro boards, started cracking down on guro
I don't think this was the case, their nijiura boards were spammed with guro and they created a dedicated 2D guro board on 2002/03/14. It's still there, although always in a vandalized state: https://cgi.2chan.net/o/
There is another (alt) board for 2D guro created on 2010/07/31 too, stuff like jissou go there: https://jun.2chan.net/51/

    >except for when he doesnt make backups and tryhard raiders flood the boards and erase years' worth of content.

Not to say it's any more acceptable, but less than 1 year of content was deleted from only one board during that raid

Lots of guro art is still being made, its just mostly stuck behind paywalls like fanbox/fantia/skeb, or on private forums and discord servers where users are vetted. Its just way too easy to get account banned online these days for artists to just freely post guro.

    There's some history here too:
