I have web hosting experience. Hell, I have GUROchan hosting experience, having run this site before it was passed to you. A site of this size can be easily operated out of pocket at under $20/month. 200 GB NVMe, 2 cores, 4 GB RAM, 100 Mbps would be more than enough. You just need to avoid overpriced hyperscalers like Digital Ocean.

If you do ads, DO NOT CENSOR CONTENT just because the advertiser wants you to! And have you considered supporting donations via cryptocurrency? I would donate.

20$ isn't a lot for a lot of people, but I'm a young NEET from the 3rd world so that would be like the equivalent of a day's wage here, if I had a job.

I'll still make sure GUROchan is running for the foreseeable future (even if the ahead is tough, eventually requiring server or domain migrations as things go south). Luckily bandwidth isn't a big issue in this age, but RAM (and more recently, storage) is. GUROchan is already hundreds of gigabytes, and from our research, our host charges more for space than most (we can't host with cheap commercial services for obvious reasons). We already got suspended from 2 services due to our content. I'm hoping it will be enough for the upcoming few years. My friend kuz has also purchased me a 2TB disk just so I can do monthly backups, in case the server experiences failure or is suspended someday.

The ads obviously won't bring a whole lot from what I see, it's not surprising most advertisers want to avoid their content on GUROchan.

We will never censor anything here. If this attitude eventually makes us ineligible for ads (a possibility with the current direction of things), maybe we can consider donations then. But for now, while ads are slightly inconveniencing, they are a more stable source of money and saves us from begging to our users.

I am still thankful for your offer. I don't want to rely on users, but I can make a donation page, and if it seems the donations are sufficient to replace the ad revenue, we can take them down after seeing the situation.

Honestly I'd do weekly backups, not monthly. Use an incremental backup solution so it doesn't fill up the disk and eat through the server's monthly bandwidth limits.

What I did when I ran the site was use a GRE tunnel as a reverse proxy. That let us host with an ISP that would absolutely not allow guro, but they had no idea and never could find out. Then the GRE tunnel was hosted with a cheap service that allowed that content, and if they ever stopped, we could have moved to another GRE tunnel without ever migrating all the data. You should give that some consideration if it helps.

I don't know how much you're currently paying for the servers, but I just sent $120 to the XMR donation address, which should cover 6 months at $20/month.

Right, that's what I do - other way isn't feasible with my own network speeds/bandwidth limits...
I usually do it more often than once a month too, but I can't comfortably promise being able to do it every week due to some constraints I have in my current life style.

Costs with our provider are a bit higher than that - the internet is not as free as it was back in the 2000s, so we are left with only a handful of reputable service providers, and none of them are offering the market rates. I may look into your GRE tunnel suggestion at some point, but right now things are stable.

As of right now, the ad experiment hasn't even gone on for a week, so we can't predict the income. If it proves unsatisfactory, we may remove them. In any case, I don't want to simultaneously ask for donations and run ads. I really just want to save up enough money to keep the site going for a long time, so I don't have to worry about the site going down if my situation suddenly changes or we get new expenses, as I have no source of income and that won't change any time soon.

I don't want to depend on any single user to help the site stay afloat, not only because it places a expectation on them, but because donations are usually one off events, not recurring.

What about incognet.io? They are super free speech oriented for anything legal, and cheap. They even allow kiwifarms so certainly they'd allow gurochan

Kiwifarms is 100% legal in the US, its just speech. The laws around porn especially the dreaded loli are not as clear cut. Some times people get imprisoned for it in some states, sometimes not. Companies won't touch it and I believe /3dcg/ is already illegal in California due to recent laws. Not to mention ID verification laws coming up every week

Well that's why you use the GRE tunnel for a reverse proxy. Host on a cheap mainstream provider like OVH then proxy through a sketchy provider. You can actually end up saving money even though you have to use two providers.

My big problem with ads is how damned annoying and distracting the animated ones are... which is unfortunately most of them these days.

I wouldn't be so eager to block more tastefully done, less intrusive non-animated ads.
