    It makes no sense to me, it's not based on the age of the OP, it's not based on the date of the last post, and it's inconsistent with the order threads are displayed below. What arcane algorithm governs the order threads are displayed in the overview?

    It is based on creation of the thread, but you read it like you would a piece of paper, left to right, left to right, left to right, etc
