As you read on the front page, the software we use on GUROchan was updated from Vichan to Kokonotsuba
You may report any kind of issues/give any kind of feedback in this thread

The whole page UI looks terrible. Lots and lots of missing images.
Very unreadable lines between threads. Posts with symbols instead of letters in some sentences.
Very ugly looking and hard to navigate with tiny /g/art/ directors.
I was thinking the page got hacked, not "updated". 😑

seems old webms were using webm thumbnails like this by some weird choice
https://boards.guro.cx/ai/src/1764959863767s.webm
We will see if they can be displayed the same way or be converted into proper thumbnails
>>24039
>Lots and lots of missing images
besides the un-showing thumbnails mentioned above, there is nothing "missing" that were there before. The image in your post was missing before the update too:
https://web.archive.org/web/20250205221439/https://boards.guro.cx/art/
>Very unreadable lines between threads
>hard to navigate with tiny /g/art/ directors
I'm not sure what do you mean. If you mean the thread list, it can be improved or changed for mobile maybe. That one feature made with mostly computers in mind
>Posts with symbols instead of letters in some sentences
Can you show examples please?

Guess i need to check the site on PC. Maybe it looks better.
But mobile experience is just simply bad compared to old UI.
And the unreadable lines between threads means the switch from one thread to another is just a color difference without any space or line making it all look very clumped together and messy when scrolling.
Idk. I will wait few days to see if some stuff gets refined or fixed in the meantime.
I just don't understand changing stuff when old stuff worked and people were use to it.
Also i think the navigation bar should be in bold/bigger font and persistent by default. Clicking those tiny links is a bit annoying.
But again- im talking from mobile experience...

on vichan thread URLs were formatted like this:
https://boards.guro.cx/art/res/7184.html
on koko its like this:
https://boards.guro.cx/art/koko.php?res=7184
so if you have any old bookmarks that 404, just do
https://boards.guro.cx/art/koko.php?res=X
replace 'X' with the thread's number (the '7184.html' part but without the '.html') and change 'art' to whatever board the thread was on
BONUS: the res parameter also accepts reply numbers, so if you remember a post's number but not what thread it was in on a board, then do something like
https://boards.guro.cx/dis/koko.php?res=24040
and it'll redirect you to it

The microscopic font is impossible to read on a pad, let alone a phone. As I type this I get numerous double and even triple clicks per letter. What problems did the old software have, anyway? I didn’t notice any. (WTH is sage noko dump?) Oh well just my opinion.

>The microscopic font is impossible to read on a pad, let alone a phone.
hmm, i tested on my phone and it all looked fine to me. Post a screencap?
>What problems did the old software have, anyway? I didn’t notice any.
good question since it's not obvious to regular users. some of the problems were:
- moderation tools were basically broken and really annoying to use
- deleting posts would time out or result in some CF error page, so spam attacks were tedious to clean up.
- GC's vichan also wasn't practical for kaguya to update.
theres more, but you get the point ^^;
>(WTH is sage noko dump?)
They're posting options that go in the email field. checkboxes are there so you dont have to manually type each option
Sage = won't bump the thread
Noko = redirect to the post after its posted
Dump = stay in the thread but don't redirect to the post
we've got features planned like Last 50 Replies and thread pagination (the latter making really big threads like the report thread and games threads easier to browse). some things need fixing but u can expect improvements and features as time goes on

When you're at the bottom of a board, switching to another requires scrolling all they way back to the top (threads have a "top" link but boards do not).
A sticky header with the list of boards, or at least a footer with the list of boards, would be welcome.

I agree, and I asked that same question, but I’m not surprised you didn’t see (or couldn’t read, or didn’t understand) the answer in this tiny font. I’m sorry the mods had problems with the previous software, but I wish the ‘solution’ hadn’t made the board worse for us. Great, now I can’t find the button to send this, ah maybe this is it.

I believe the current default theme is how GUROchan looked like through 2000s, or at least how GUROchan theme looks like on wakaba (because wayback archives don't have 2000s CSS saved on pages like
https://web.archive.org/web/20080723182506/http://img.gurochan.net/g/wakaba.html
)
It also seems to just have used kareha on some boards, sometimes with insufficient styling
https://web.archive.org/web/20070601210628/http://orz.gurochan.net/req/index.html
Maybe we can use a similar layout on the text-heavy boards later on. That's what we used to do on /dis/ before switching back to vichan as I remember.
Later on it seems to have changed to this theme (which could maybe also be an option) with the board software changing to kusaba x:
https://web.archive.org/web/20100611212411/http://gurochan.net/g/
(and seems to have stayed this way until its death, and at least the beginning of the second GUROchan iteration:
https://web.archive.org/web/20140628020118/https://guroch.org/
)
It's mostly the same theme with a little lighter post background.
The Guro Light and Guro Dark themes (named Gurochan 2021 themes in the current selector) are a bit older than 2021 and due a renaming. They are from gurochan.cx, the iteration before 2021 reboot which died in 2020. This is a snapshot from September 2019 using the theme:

O hai, I'm the one who made the existing Gurochan styles for kokonotsuba
The one called "Gurochan" (currently the default) was my attempt at emulating the original Wakaba Gurochan style as closely as possible, just for the sake of having those styles on Heyuri. This was long before the plans to move Gurochan back to kokonotsuba were established and I was working on a ton of different styles all at once, so I didn't rigorously test it on mobile or anything ^^;
It uses a sans-serif font family at 10pt - traditionally, 10pt was a common size for sans-serif fonts because they would appear much larger than serif fonts at the same point size on Windows. On mobile devices, serif and sans-serif fonts are usually a similar size to each other at the same point size, so 10pt ends up being too small for comfort. You can get around this by making an override in the CSS for mobile display resolutions, but I had neglected to add such a thing to the Gurochan style. Something like this should correct it (you can paste this into the custom CSS area in Settings -> Style):
@media screen and (max-width: 650px) {
body {
font-size: 12pt;
}
}
"Guro Light" (formerly called Gurochan 2021 since I just assumed that's when it was made) was something I threw together as fast as possible once it became apparent that a software switch was imminent. However, I'd never officially "finished" it - it was just taken from my test kokonotsuba instance in the WIP state I'd left it in. I think it's mostly done, but there may be areas I've neglected
Regarding the Dark version: I haven't even started on it, mainly because I fell ill while I was working on the Light version. It's gonna be a little difficult now that the transition has already occurred - and truthfully, I've just not been in the right mood to work on it ^^;

Hello.
May I draw your attention to my post in /lit/
https://boards.guro.cx/dis/koko.php?res=28856
(short formatting string guide (Update 2025a))?
It is slightly more accurate than the BBCode reference (which basically is a good thing to have).
The strikethrough and the spoiler tag are not only mixed up (name and syntax), but — while recognized by the parser — both are not set into action.
I understand that there are more urgent issues. Nevertheless I'd like to list the IMHO most missing formatting strings:
==Headline== (2 equals signs before and after the text) In the source codes of old posts the CSS-class "heading" is still applied, but no more interpreted (see
https://boards.guro.cx/dis/koko.php?res=27777)
BTW, it would be nice, if the old centered header could be reinstalled too.
> (one closing angle bracket) Quoting is not available. (Old posts: CSS-class "unkfunc" in source code, but "inactive".)
>>> (three closing angle brackets) New links to other boards can't be set. Links in old posts are still working.
Is it possible to activate more of the bbcode? And are there substitution options available (e.g. for arrows, dashes, ellipses and, of course, the "40-dash-line)?
And last but not least: Thank you for your hard work. :)

software-wise there's already a setting for that, but I'm not sure if there's a reason for that anymore since threads are paged akin to traditional forums (currently 500 replies per page - again, traditionally it's much lower but I think modern servers and browsers can handle 500 just fine), which can have hundreds of pages.
>>24095
I put up the BBCode reference page a little hastily. We'll expand it soon, adding new stuff - maybe some just on /lit/?
>>> (three closing angle brackets) New links to other boards can't be set.
This is the one that may take a while though.
Heading will be fixed soon too
>Quoting is not available. (Old posts: CSS-class "unkfunc" in source code, but "inactive".)
What do you mean by this? They seem to work on old posts too.
>>24086
This is what happens when we change the software so many times... Probably my only choice of fixing is editing them from database manually, like I did for those files. I believe only a number of files from a short time period are affected, so feel free to report more files like that

>What do you mean by this? They seem to work on old posts too.
The above line should be different from the other text in some way. In old posts it was grey instead of black. With the new software I don't see any highlighting. Do you see something?
If you look into the html source code of this post you will find this:
<span class="unkfunc">>What do you mean by this? They seem to work on old posts too.</span>
So the closing angle brackets is recognized, the CSS-class is applied, but it is not defined in the stylesheets (and "unkfunk2" neither):

It's defined in
https://boards.guro.cx/static/css/kokoimg/base.css
Unless you use an ancient browser, styling should appear without the need of JS.
If you use an ancient browser, then JS is effectively "required" for some CSS:
https://jhildenbiddle.github.io/css-vars-ponyfill/#/
- in short, we are using a backwards-compability script and there is simply no other good way of doing this.
If you want to keep to use an ancient browser, have JS disabled on GUROchan, and want to see the right CSS, you have two choices:
- executing ponyfill via some browser extension
- giving them var-less styling via some browser extension
Besides this, all JS are merely QOL improvements (though most wouldn't work on old browser anyways) and you can simply inspect the source code before individually allowing them if you have doubts about privacy.

in general, its not practical to deal with so much active data at once. so pagination makes sense to compensate for having large threads. 500 replies per page is enough for most threads anyway

Is there any way to link external image while having site to show a thumbnail, or is that reserved only to directly hosted images? If not, would you kindly consider such option?
I'm asking because of "no realistic AI, host it elsewhere rule" and so second part of question is if linking such thumbnail would pose any legal risks to the site.

That's not possible for 2 reasons
- our software generates the thumbnails from image, without the server processing a big image it's impossible to create a thumbnail
- even if the source can be thumbnailed, having it thumbnail makes every browser accessing a page to send a request there, which could in theory compromise your security if someone posted a link for IP grabbing

Not sure if this was already brought up or if it is a new issue but (some?) post-quotings will not show the corresponding thread when you mouse hover over them unless you "enter" the thread (by clicking "reply" or "last 50 posts"). Instead the quote - window will show "quote source not found". Example in the screenshot, sadly the mouse cursor didn't get captured, it should be hovering on the 14133.

right now it only captures posts currently on the page using JS.
For something where it shows quote-linked replies regardless of what page ur on there needs to be a proper post API implemented. im currently busy with IRL and reworking some of kokonotsuba's javascript (which may take some time) but it can be expected in the future.

If you are referring to mega.nz deleting stuff from their servers, that's unrelated to GUROchan.
If you are referring to mega.nz links themselves disappearing on posts, that didn't happen.
If you are referring to users no longer sharing source for their LoRAs as often (in case that's the case with the board now), it's not really a technical issue for developers to solve.

Thanks for mentioning this file. I've totally overseen it.
In fact you're right about my browser. Mostly and especially for NSFW-sites I use a live system starting from DVD that ‒ because of it's nature ‒ can't be infected by any malware. The disadvantage is of course the missing update option. And it seems that the browser is indeed a little bit out of date. After downloading a site and changing some formatting strings in the base.css to direct values instead of the var()-function my browser could handle this.
For testing I exceptionally enabled JS. Unfortunately this had no effect. Maybe there are also some "new" commands, but I didn't investigate this further. Probably it is easier to burn a new DVD. :))
>you can simply inspect the source code
You are looking for a proofreader, aren't you? ;D
To check 23 files with a little bit more than 531 KB, with 4433 lines (of which one has 23166 columns [ponyfill] and another 389778 (sic!) [ruffle]) and some dependencies ("HEY URI, KOKO.JS is not loaded!") can be a real pain in the ass. I'll better get a new browser. ;)

I might be wrong, but I think some old comments are showing up in unrelated threads. They appear to be comments originally from threads which the admins deleted, but now they are showing up in random places.
It's possible that I am misremembering, but if you guys run low on bugs to fix, it might be good to see if there are any orphaned comments in the DB, which are somehow getting displayed now.

With kokonotsuba's code? depends what but you can find the repo here:
https://github.com/Heyuri/kokonotsuba
we use this chat room to coordinate development which you can use if you need help with anything:
https://cgi.heyuri.net/devchat/
we've got a huge backlog of things to do but its not easy to navigate such a large code base if ur unfamiliar with the weirdness of the average PHP imageboard software. the 'easiest' is probably the javascript/frontend. im currently working on more anti-spam protections (that fukken porn link spam bot i swear...), but i was last working on new image expanding js manually.
you see, kokonotsuba's js was done in some weird modular object oriented system. which is a neat idea in theory but the coupling & abstraction is annoying. And most js features act independently from each other (with the exception of some moderation-related js) so i dont think they need to be loaded & managed through one system anyway. also owing to the fact that a lot of variables are like 3 letters or less and with little to no comments.
its not super difficult but time consuming
otherwise, you can help gurochan by reporting bugs you find and posting more content to the site (which is more fun anyway)
>>24220
can you link some examples? orphaned replies don't exist under normal circumstances coz of how the tables are set up

No problem. Most JS-programs are messy ‒ partly because of JS's nature, partly on purpose (*) and partly because of incompetent or lazy programmers [present company excepted ;) ]. So there is no need of help. Thank you, nevertheless.
> we don't have a report feature.
Pffewww. I'm glad to read this. I was concerned about missing something. Thanks again.
(*) There are really programmers thinking they can completly obscure their code to prevent it from being used by others or to hide its malicious functions.
>>24213
> I have not run into any major problems, even running Tails for extra security.
Tails is a system I take in consideration. Does it run as livesystem on a readonly medium?
> since I usually get blocked by the IP address filter.
This is a downside of tails. Tor adresses are often excluded for the same reasons other proxies are blocked for.
And now for something completely different. (Christopher Trace and Monty Python)
Does Kokonotsuba provide a feature to edit old posts? The only option to correct something is to delete and repost. This is managable as long as there is no following post referring to the to be corrected one. Afterwards it will be awkward. Although this is nothing to be on top of your to-do-list, I'd like to make a humble request for enabling, if possible.

to minimizer low effort driveby cp spamming, perhaps first posts on new threads from containing links, then banning bumping, or throttling, like one ip is allowed only one new thread per hour. or somethin other than letting them fester for hours every single time.

the CP spammer evades every counter-measure so its a wild goose chase trying to develop new ways all the time, especially if they make it harder for regular users to post.

It may be helpful if the search tips would be extended by more lines, telling details about how the search terms are processed. This isn't clearly communicated.
Proposal:
* Enter keywords into the desired fields, then press the "Search" button.
* The Search looks for posts, hence a thread may be represented multiple times.
* The search fields are AND-combined, which means the results must match at least one word from each field.
* For an OR-search over more than one search field do a separate search for each needed field.
* Alternatively use the
General
field to search all available
text
fields (i.e. the [Post-]No. field is not included).
* The keywords
inside
the individual search fields are OR-combined, returning every post matching at least one word.
* You can choose to match whole words or let the search work like there are wildcards at the
end
of the words.
* Quotes around search terms have no effect.
* Excluding by preceding a keyword with a dash ("-") is not possible.
* You can choose to look only for opening posts.
* You can select the boards from which posts are returned.
This is what I found by trying. Of course I have no idea if it is complete and/or correct. Does a more detailed guide exist? Provided with an even technical manual I'm willing to write a "readable" version.

we have a system that allows banning certain images via perceptual hashes. but that can be evaded by just using more obscure/newer cp, using AI generated cp, or heavily distorting the images (all of which he's done before).
as for photoDNA i dont think applying for it would work or is a good idea. both for the facts above and i doubt they'd approve an application from gurochan - not even sketchy ad companies will accept us! let alone microsoft
so to be clear, you can't stop someone from posting material like CP. you can make it ever-so-slightly more inconvenient but most possible counter-measures are just wasting development time for something that can he can learn to evade in 5 minutes. tops.
and if you want an example of someone who went on a goose chase trying to figure out how to prevent child pr0n from being uploaded altogether - you can take a look at the pomf2.lain.la guy. he ultimately couldn't prevent CP from getting uploaded despite deploying tons of countermeasures (including photoDNA). pedobears just used new methods each time. at best he could comply with legal take down requests
this kind of spam has been happening for over 20 years so its not like its a new thing either (you can even see some on archives of 4chan from 2005!)
rant ovar, just thought i'd explain it thoroughly since a decent chunk of gurochan users arent very familiar with the imageboard side of the internet

The best way to make a system inconvenient to spammers is a closed one with registration, login and delay of first post permission. But this is of course nothing wanted on this board.
Something heading into this direction could be a whitelist. Although on an anonymous board a list of names makes no sense, a list of tripcodes could. It wouldn't help to spot spammers in the first place, but it would narrow down the amount of posts that have to be checked for spam by script or ‒ even more important ‒ by hand.
If the users are encouraged to use the (secure) tripcodes and the list grows with the time, an automatic filter can discard known posters from further checks, leaving only resisters and unknown or new posters to be checked and the latters to be added to the list if appropriate.
I don't know how much development time it would take, but i can imagine that the search system of the database program that is storing the posts already has the ability to perform such a task without too much efforts.

Is it a dedicated troll manually spamming or is it just the typical bot CP spam that imageboards often get? If it's the bots, try figuring out some traits of their connection (eg certain user agents, certain timing behavior) and "allow" uploads but just shadowban, so they think the upload succeeded. That often works for semi-smart bots.
