First things first: What I'm calling "GUROchan Chat 2", for lack of a more creative name, is my own personal project, not something sponsored by this website. My only mildly official status on this website is that I have been granted just enough admin power to mop up spam posts now and again. Beyond that, I'm just another user here.

Secondly, if you're never visited the GUROchan chat room, you might want to check it out. It's not a busy (or even active) place most of the day, so I can't promise you if you drop in that there will be anyone there to chat with, but when there are others hanging out, it can be a lot of fun.

For myself, however, (he said, trying to be diplomatic) I find the current chat room design a bit... er, primitive? Retro to an excessive degree? Of course, for some people that retro look-and-feel is a big part of image board culture. If that's your thing too, then the basic chat at https://chat.guro.cx/ is for you.

If you're like me, however, and want something a bit more up-to-date, a bit easier on the eyes, and with more user-friendly features, you might want to check out GUROchan Chat 2.

GUROchan Chat 2 is a different interface for the same conversation that takes place on GUROchan Chat Prime. Same messages. Same people chatting with each other.

The easiest way to use GUROchan Chat 2 is to simply go to https://chatproxy.chat/

Better integration with the original chat room, however, can be achieved by using Tampermonkey (available as a plugin for most browsers) and this userscript: https://chatproxy.chat/chat-mods.user.js

The advantage of the Tampermonkey way of doing things is that your screen name will appear just like any other person in the chat room, even to people using the original chat page. If you simply go to https://chatproxy.chat/, however, then all of your comments are posted by one common user named CHAT② in the original chat room, with your desired 《screen name》 prefixed in front of your comments.

Why use my new chat interface?

• You can paste images from your clipboard directly into your messages, and other users can see thumbnail images of what you post (which are opened at full size when clicked on, of course).
• You can have private Direct Message conversations with other chatters.
• You can edit and delete your own messages... at least as far as other Chat 2 users see things. (Your typos and regretted words will live on at Chat Prime.)
• Selectable light and dark color themes. There’s even a theme called “Like It’s 1999” that will restore much of the... um, let’s call it “nostalgic” look of the original GUROchat. If you’re into that sort of thing.
• WYSIWYG text entry for using features like italic and bold text, without needing to use BBCode.
• Easy access to many emoji.
• Greater reliability maintaining a steady connection to the chat room, as the original design can be broken by a single failed attempt to read the latest messages, from which it will not recover until the user refreshes their browser.

Caveats?

• My chat room is pretty new software, and more complicated code than the original chat system, so there are probably still a few lurking bugs to work out. (When in doubt, refresh your browser and reenter the chat room.)
• My web site becomes one more website with access to your IP address and your tripcode (if you use one), should that raise your privacy and security concerns.
• Your private DMs are theoretically readable by me, but I encrypt them without providing any easy way for me to decode them, and they're fully deleted after two hours.
