Are we talking about actual injuries, or just depictions? There are lots of ways to depict things without taking a photo of it actually happening. People don't usually have the empathy reaction to something the know isn't real.

Just consider all the action movies where people get shot all over the screen. People seem to love that sort of movie, yet most of them would probably pass out if they saw someone shot in in real life. For some reason when it's fake, it's fun, but when it's real, it's horrifying.

So the fake/real distinction is pretty important. Even when we're talking about people fantasizing about it happening to themselves, that's just another kind of fake. Probably not many people who enjoy that fantasy would also go for it in reality.

I disagre with that thory, becxause of simple logic reasons.

Mirror neurons cannot work in that way simply because none of us actually experienced anything of that on our body. The could only do that in the situation when you actually experienced that event yourself and if it was strong enough to be remembered.

So the only thing our empathy can rely on is facial expressions and context. It does not matter if it is real or fantasy as when I see someone being hurt in the normal movie it makes me sad but if this is happening in guro manga it is enjoyable and if this is happening in the tom and jerry cartoon it is just funny.
Thus our mirror neurons are supposed to evaluate emotional state of another being and not just respond to whast is happening to them but evaluate lots of things including the fact if we actually care about that person. As if we like someone we will feel bad if something bad happens to them but if we hate them we feel happy when our enemies get hurt.

As for my own situation, like someone who learned about injuries and torture from movies, I see them as only mild discomfort.

It's like an extreme form of sexual tension, where people want to have sex but can't, only in this case the reason they can't have sex is physical and permanent.

Fantasies can be layered and complicated. Just because you're choosing to fantasize about a thing, doesn't mean the thing is consensual within the fantasy. Sometimes people desire for something to happen against their will, especially when they're too afraid to consent to it, or when having it forced adds to the excitement. Being a little god in control of everything can be boring, and the only alternative is for things to sometimes happen when you don't want them to happen.

Fantasies often contain things that cannot happen. Certainly if a person wants a thing to happen, it cannot happen against his will, but often a person will fantasize about being people other than himself. It would seem that most violent power fantasies are like this. One might fantasize about being an action hero, shooting people, blowing things up, but that doesn't mean those things are really desired. Most people would be horrified to shoot a gun at a real person. On the victim side, it is fairly common for people to fantasize about being raped.
