They are kind of both, sometimes a girl gets cut in half and doesn't die, sometimes they seem to die. I hope there will be some continuation of the later stuff on pixiv, it looks like some loose storyline could be in place with some kind of immortality involved. I really appreciate how much detail is in the anatomy, even if it's not just girls. Can't wait for more *_*
