Big ol art rant, here we go:
So on the subject of pay to see...
Well nobody has the right to decide what an artist does with their work. The artist is the one doing the service.
Plus, taking away your bookmark on a few of the artists pages, sure, hurts feelings... But your bookmarking a page or two is not a service which is equal in value to the artist making work.
The service you do by bookmarking and sharing an artists work is advertisement. If all you do is lurk, and then you slander an artist if they take their work away from you, your subscription has no inherent value at all, so you don't have that to trade to begin with. Basically, you're a kinda harmless parasite who happens to be there while the artist works, and an artist taking their work away from you is not harmful to the artist.
Another metaphor:
It's sort of like knocking on a strangers door and saying "Hey, I saw we like the same things and you have art skill. Draw things that we like."
And their reply is "Well, sure. If you want me to draw, how will you support me in drawing, aside from just looking at it."
"You expect my support? Me looking at what you do isn't enough for you? I guess we aren't really the same after all, you pilferer."
The fact that you can't afford an artists work is your problem, the fact that you can't choose between the various artists you subscribe to is also your problem. The issue of weather it's sustainable to have subscription models for every artist under the sun, that's an arguable concern, however...
It often sounds like these people wouldn't pay under any circumstance, so that's a moot point. For example, a solution to that problem might be "Maybe artists could run patreons that produce products which are released to everyone, and patrons for free." But these people wouldn't pay once those products were released either, so it doesn't matter.
