It's mostly pre-islamic traditions actually. There's nothing in islam that demands it and in fact a few passages in the Quran that argue against it. Unlike other local traditions (i.e. anything that looked even remotely polytheistic) it was never viewed as a priority to stamp out though, so it's still around even after more than a millennium.
