Sorry for the delayed response.
SecondLife can have a big learning curve that stems from (1) its age and (2) its relatively open-ended nature. It doesn't help that the platform doesn't draw new users, so you'll be surrounded by veterans--which can be good because they'll help. You'll need an account (free) and, unfortunately, you should probably plan to spend about $25-$50 USD to get your avatar looking great. The best time to commit to this is around Black Friday when there are huge sales on components like your character's mesh body (3rd party mesh bodies are the de factor standard in SL, the one provided for free by LindenLabs isn't great), head (same as the mesh body, 3rd party is the de facto standard), and some outfits. For the purposes of what you're looking for, you'll likely be able to get away with a few, high quality outfits. Make no mistake, these won't be free. The designers in SL are professionals and charge for their products.
What you'll want to do first is simply download the client, make an account, and log into SL to see if it's something that you think would be worth spending time to learn.
How you customize your character is simple. Each character has a set limit of attachment spots (think inventory slots) and you attach things like clothes, jewelry, genitals, etc. as you wish from your inventory. The difficulty is understanding exactly what you need. I'd be happy to help if you got in world.
