I don't know if I'm the first to mention this but strangling doesn't cause asphyxiation. It cuts off blood supply to the brain which has the same effect as asphyxiation- namely, the brain doesn't get enough oxygen and shuts down. Choking is different from strangling, as choking involves closing the windpipe to cause asphyxiation. Applying pressure around the neck (particularly on the sides) leads to strangulation, as choking involves more focused pressure on the front of the neck.
