The very first was the arcade cabinet 'Death Race' released in 1976, a modification to Exidy's earlier 1975 game, 'Destruction Derby', where, rather than driving into opposing cars to destroy them, you would instead be driving into pedestrians or "gremlins" for points.
Though the carnage was primitive in appearance, Death Race was still met with extreme public outcry.
