Maybe I'm not an old-timer enough, because I don't recall the good old days. The way I recall it, high-quality guro art has always been scarce and timeless images would appear very infrequently. Over the past five years or so, it felt like guro experienced a brief resurgence, but now it's starting to feel like it's fading. That's not extinction, that's just things going back to normal, as I see it.

I still love this pic. I sometimes credit it as the pic that really, truly, sparked my interest in guro and near-guro. But how old is it? 25, 30 years old, maybe? I lost my personal treasure trove 15 years ago to a RAID array failure and never bothered to make a new one, and yet I can't think of a single image from it that I haven't seen resurface again since then. There's just never been enough output to put the past in the past.

Guro is a niche genre. We aren't always going to have talented artists prolifically outputting high quality work. When someone is around and interested, we get good work. I remember a few times when it felt like a queue of good artists was lining up for their turn, but those periods are rare and brief.

I agree. Artists face a lot of pressure, and to become good, they need to spend a lot of time studying anatomy and physics. They quickly burn out when they realize their work can't be monetized. Still, there have been examples of extraordinary pieces that got banned on all platforms. That’s why I’m looking for any traces from all eras, even though some of them are completely lost.

Yeah they've been circling the drain for a while. There are less and less places they can post without censorship and AI has made it worse.

When the old Gurochan first crashed and came back and crashed again over and over a lot of the artists never came back.

Several other sites and places have died as well like SirSnuffHorrid and other places, some of them had a bunch of links going to other places once upon a time but without those in between sites there was no way to find to other ones.

I know some artists have turned to AI or given up because of it. And all of the ones I can still find post less stuff less often and it's quite often not as polished as some of their older stuff.

If you want the old days back what you need is a site that is easy to find, easy to use, uncensored, and monetizable.
And I'm not sure that's possible anymore, not these days with the spreading demand to provide ID to log into sites and AI slop everywhere.

I always try to avoid rash conclusions and doom. You say they "censored" the movie, but the movie description states:

"Based on a Suehiro Maruo manga, Midori was banned pretty much everywhere for years and the experience seemed to have put the director (also the animator) off so much, he moved from film to video games. A shame for movie fans because of the artistry on display here, even if some of the stills were replications from the manga."

I know nothing else about it, but this clearly seems to indicate the movie was banned for plagiarism and/or copyright infringement first and foremost.

Typically, if an author disappears, you never hear the reason. But don't assume it's always censorship. Just from the top of my head, one artist I knew was jailed for unrelated crimes, another lost family member(s) in an accident and didn't feel like drawing guro anymore, yet another got a job at a professional studio and wanted to avoid trouble. One got doxxed, I believe.

The payment issues are real, but not unique to guro. And not permanent, people will solve this, they always do.
