Epilogue

Albert had spent the entire afternoon digging the graves for his daughters. It had come as a shock when the news of Jennifer's decision to join Abby on the spit arrived though he was invited to the Processing Centre just in time for their lovely young bodies to be served.

Abby had tasted sweet, almost like chicken, while Jennifer was rich and homely. He licked his lips, thinking of the leftovers in the freezer he had been given. It had been a few days since then and he had finally been sent the remains for burial. From a cardboard box he lifted out Abby's preserved little head, as beautiful as she was when she was alive thanks to the embalming process.

He picked up the dried bones and neatly laid them out into a full skeleton as was tradition and then he placed the head at the top after kissing Abby's forehead one last time. β€œI'll miss you the most my little tomboy,” he said, his voice cracking as he spoke, β€œI hoped beyond hope that you would make it, that you'd turn thirty and give me beautiful grandchildren one day but knowing that you died for the good of Humanity puts me at ease.”

Next came Jennifer. Her glasses had been found and given to him and Albert couldn't resist putting them on one last time. β€œMy smart and dutiful Jennifer,” he said proudly, his voice shaking, β€œI know we never liked the same things but I'm so proud of you for becoming a Butcher and taking care of your sister,” he chuckled, β€œEven if you did it the wrong way, we're only human though right?” Jennifer's smiling head was silent.

Albert sighed and laid Jennifer out the same way he had done Abby. After staring at their heads one last time he buried them and placed the gravestones down, each girl was buried on one side of their mother.

β€œThere we go Jenna,” he said with a smile as he looked at her gravestone, β€œWe did our job as parents and raised two dutiful girls who didn't fight or fuss when they're number came up.” He cleared his throat and wiped away tears. β€œI know a man isn't supposed to cry over a dead woman but...well...you women were my life.”

β€œI'll miss you...”
