You did ask for critique, and the only thing I would have liked even more, is some anatomical details of the "resistance" that the spike met. Maybe one time it's the diaphragm? Or some other tough muscle? I don't suppose it has to be strictly accurate - I mean who really knows, but those details would appeal to me. But OTOH, I know how time consuming (and kinda boring) researching all that stuff is, and maybe it's not really necessary for this story anyway.
