Rather than an amputee, it seems more like just a brain in a jar connected to a computer, or perhaps even a digitized copy of a brain. Notice how when she sighed "there was no actual breath behind it". It's because her voice is just synthesized, she doesn't even have lungs, so as maximum she can be a head.

Anyway, nice story, I especially enjoyed the preparation of the 2 year old girl, so casual, just as I love it.
