I remember the eve of the war. A few days before, radio and television were beaming lurid pictures into our homes of the so-called Massacre of Pompia. The townspeople had been encouraged by the authorities to descend upon the elven quarter of town, which they did. This was a walled quarter, dating from the days of the ghettoes, but the gates had been open for more than a century by 1418. The elves had some warning of what was to come (a few Pompard cops had gotten drunk on ale and wandered into an elf temple, and the cops gargled out news of upcoming actions to temple priests), and so the elves had closed the ancient gates. However, townspeople busted the gates oven with a dragon provided by the Tolsiki. The mob proceeded to run wild in the quarter, burning down all the elven temples and smash windows, slamming babies against walls, stomping brutally on elf kids, raping the pretty girls, castrating some of the handsome men, and looting, looting, and more looting. The Tarsonians started packing up their bags and leaving for the border. Jokim Tolsik had banned them from leaving the country, but many of them snuck over the border anyway, and of course we welcomed them with open arms. How could we not? They were our sisters and brothers, after all.
Tolsik saw it differently, however. To him and his empire, the refugees were traitors and vermin, to eventually be wiped out. We were a vermin nation, nothing about us was right, and so we must be wiped out. How to do that? Start a fight, of course. And so he did, citing the refugees as a “casus belli”.
