You can turn this argument either way. On one hand if they were to derive fun from the fact that other people are having fun, it could be said that they're doing it for their own fun in the end anyway. On the other hand, even when they're dying solely for their own fun or even for the unexperienceable fun, in the end they're doing it for a certain other's fun after all: the reader's fun. Because the unexperienceable fun is only unexperienceable within their universe, but the reader who is outside their universe can experience the fun from reading about it. And if you personally don't, that's about you and not about the stories, because other people do.

It's not 2+2=5, it's:
- Where do you get money from?
- From the bedside table.
- And who puts it there?
- My wife.
- Then where does she get it from?
- I give it to her.
- So where do you get it from?
- Why, from the bedside table.
That kind of joke.
