In my opinion the way how much they are scared looks pretty fine to me leaves enough ambiguity to fit everyone's tastes and resisting is naturally quite useless in this setting it is not like escaping is possible unless story will get some interesting twist.
Only if you decided to write many more stories in this topic it woud become pretty boring if everyone is just as obedient.
