The first thing Xnarla remembered was waking up in the smoking wreckage of her spacecraft, still gripping the control stick.
The second was the alien voices outside the ship, muffled by the cockpit canopy. She tried to power up the ship subsystems to scan outside, but the ship remained dead. There was a banging on the hull, then the sound of some primitive power tool being tooled up. The alien warrior fell back into a deep unconscious state.
She woke up again, now outside her ship. It was mid morning, and the sun was shining down relentlessly. She was laid out on a blanket inside a tent. Her warrior belt was laid out beside her, and she thanked Semarina, the goddess of war for that. A warriors battle belt was her life, as it included her title, caste, name, and her energy sword. One was naked without it.
She clipped the belt around her waist and slid out of the tent. The wind whispered through the branches of the trees. Birds sang. This must be "Terra". The only habitable planet in this sector of space. She racked her brain. There was one sentient species inhabiting the planet. A biped mammal like her own race. "Humans", they called themselves.
One of the "humans" was sitting on a log tending to a fire. A juvenile, perhaps?
It was small, its head reaching her belly button, with a messy mop of brown hair, wearing a single white top and nothing underneath. The small human reached into a pack placed on the grass beside it and pulled a brightly coloured package out. It unwrapped the package and pulled out an oblong dark brown rectangle, which the little creature enthusiastically bit down on.
She approached the human juvenile, keeping one hand on her sword handle.
There was a snap, a tree branch under her foot.
The human turned, its eyes widening as it saw the tall alien woman approaching.
It began to stand, babbling something in its language. Its voice was loud and high pitched, deepening her belief that it was a juvenile male.
It approached, and proffered the small dark brown thing in hand, one bite already taken. The inside was white, made of some frozen creamy foodstuff.
Against her better judgement, she knelt down and took the offering and ate it in one sitting.
Poisonous, was her first thought. Her insides roiled, and she promptly vomited the offensive meal out on the grass. She turned her head, saw the juvenile human approach, hands outstretched, big brown eyes.
Her hand activated the energy sword and the combat implants kicked in, injecting a dose of time dilation drug into her bloodstream.
Time flow stopped. She gracefully unsheathed the sword and with a single upward stroke separated the young human's head from its shoulders.
The headless body crumpled forward, a high pressure jet of blood spraying forth from the flat cross section of neck. The head flew up. Xnarla caught it as it came down. Its expression was frozen in shock, slack jawed and wide eyed.
She tied it to her belt by its messy mop of hair, deciding to count it as her first war trophy.
Xnarla strode off through the dirt trail that snaked through the trees, the young human's head bouncing against her leg, still dripping warm blood. The ship, and the other juvenile humans were not far away.
