What I mean is... something like a girl dying for art in a world where it's taboo and nobody will ever know this work of art is made by her death except the eccentric artist himself... that sounds like something fucked up that could actually happen in our real world. But something like kids casually choosing a pastime between playing tag and hanging for death that's something unique only fictional characters can afford to do. In a way it's like they know they're fictional and enjoy it to the fullest, almost being smug to us real people about how they can do such crazy stuff we can't. Although that sounds more fourth wall breaking than I'd like to, so let's better say it's me as an author knowing they're fictional and admiring how this let's them do such crazy things and realizing this admiration into writing them doing it. And then as a reader it lets me live out such things that would be absolutely impossible in the real world. Utilizing fiction not to tell a story that you might as well hear in the news, but for something that only fiction can do.
