Potential

“You had so much potential,” Debbie’s mom scolded her. “It’s a shame you’re such a dumb little slut.”

“I’m not a dumb slut!” Debbie protested. “My grades. . .”

“If you weren’t a dumb slut you wouldn’t have let that boyfriend talk you into getting a tattoo,” her mother broke in firmly. “Now take a deep breath.”

It was an old argument. Debbie rolled her eyes as she sucked in air. Her mother tipped the tightly-bound girl forward over the tub’s edge, head underwater, and sat primly on her daughter’s back as Debbie jerked, bubbled, kicked, and died.
