In the future, it's normal to make backups of yourself so that if you die unexpectedly, you are remade like you were at the last update. While opinions on whether the copy is "really you" vary, there's no denying the practice prevents a lot of grief, and often disincentivizes murder.

A woman wakes up, having had her backup updated in her sleep. It's so routine she doesn't even think about it. But it's today that she decides to get snuffed, perhaps at the hands of a specific person. And when her copy is awakened, she reaches the same conclusion.
